DPS Authorized Road Test
- PAPERWORK REQUIREMENTS -
16 and 17 yrs old
18 to 25 yrs old
25 yrs and older
Must be at least 16 years old at the time of the test.
A student taking a DPS driving test must have held their learner’s permit for at least 6-months.
- This date can be verified on the back of the student’s permit.
A valid learner’s permit is required to be on the student and verify identity.
- Permit must not be expired.
- A paper temporary permit is only valid for a short time-please check the expiration date.
- Students with an A-restriction must have corrective lenses.
This will be obtained from a driving school program whether in-person, online or parent-taught program.
MDA students- we will provide at the time of your test.
Certificate must state at the top “FOR DRIVER’S LICENSE ONLY”
We will need certificates from all programs that have been used for official driver’s ed.
The certificate that was used to obtain the student permit IS NOT the correct certificate for this driving test.
Obtained from student’s school verifying a student is currently enrolled.
- The VOE used for obtaining the student permit is no longer valid.
- Has a 30-day expiration.
- During summer-break a student may use their last report card instead of the VOE.
- Homeschool students obtain the VOE here.
All students must provide proof that the required 30 hours of practice driving has occurred.
- The log is invalid if the dates are not congruent with the issuing of the student’s permit.
- Dates must not be duplicated.
- 10-hours of driving must be done at night.
- Any licensed adult 21-and-over may sign off on a drive time.
- The parent that signs the bottom parent signature is the parent that needs to be with the student at the test.
- The log must be done in good faith and without falsification.

No teen may take a state driving test without the signoff of a parent and/or legal guardian.
Students who are 18yrs old to 25 are to schedule as an adult but with required paperwork.
A valid adult learner’s permit is required to be on the person and verify identity.

- A driver with a B-restriction holds a learner’s license.
- Driver’s with a B-restriction may not drive alone and must be supervised behind the wheel.
- A paper temporary permit is only valid for a short time – please check the expiration date.
- Students with an A-restriction must have corrective lenses.
This will be obtained from a driving school program whether taught in-person or online.
- This is a required 6-hour course.
- An adult driving student who started driver’s ed as a teen may use that certificate IF they completed the teen course completely and provide the proper certificate, logs and adult supervision.

This is OPTIONAL but highly suggested for all new adult drivers. This will be obtained from a driving school program whether taught in-person or online.
- This is an optional 6-hour course.

- VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS -
- PREPARING FOR THE ROAD TEST -
A student must provide a vehicle for the purposes of the driving test.
- A rental of a MDA driving vehicle for the test can be done at the time of checkout for an additional $25
- The vehicle should be one the student is most comfortable in and capable of driving effectively under pressure.
Driver must present a paper copy of their vehicle insurance at the time of the driving test.
- The insurance must not be expired.
- The insurance copy must be on paper.
- The insurance must have the proper vehicle listed along with the VIN number.
- Proof of insurance is not required if renting a MDA vehicle for your test.
The vehicle must have a proper vehicle registration sticker on the windshield displaying an unexpired registration.
The State of Texas ,by law, requires two-license plates (front and back) for Texas registered vehicles.
- Your test may be canceled if this is out of compliance. (no refunds)
- For vehicles registered in other states, besides Texas, may have one license plate.
- Vehicles with dealer plates, temp tags, paper tags or government issued specialty tags are exempt from the two plate requirements if they are properly registered within the bounds of the law.
All licensed vehicles must have working turn signal lights at each corner of the vehicle.
- This will be verified at the time of the road test.
When pressing the brake pedal the vehicle must activate three brake lights.
- Older vehicles that do not have a center brake light are exempt from the 3 rule.
- The brake lights will be verified at the time of the test.
If the road test will be taken during low light periods of dusk, dawn, evening or low visibility, working headlights are required.
All road legal vehicles must have a functioning horn.
- This will be verified at the time of the test.
Working windshield wipers are required if weather conditions warrant their use.
The vehicle must have functioning seat belts for all occupants.
The vehicle must have a door handle that can be opened, without difficulty, from the inside of the vehicle.
Vehicles must have one side mirror to the right and left of the vehicle and one center mirror inside the vehicle.

- If doors are locked ,when arriving, please wait as the examiner may be on another test.
- Please have the required paperwork ready to go.
- Parents may wait inside the building during the driving test.
Once paperwork has been checked the road test takes approximately 10-20 minutes.
Only questions asking the examiner to repeat instructions or directions may be asked.
- The examiner will not be able to offer help or tips.
- If the examiner has to intervene during the exam that means the test is likely failed.
- If something unexpected happens during the test fall back to what is the safe and legal thing to do.
You are required to adhere to proper speed procedure according to the Texas Driver’s Handbook.
- Look out for speed limit signs.
- If you don’t know the speed limit fall back to your default speeds from the manual and Driver’s Ed.
- 20 residential
- 30 streets
- 40 frontage roads and major thoroughfares
- Speeding is the number one traffic violation and it is the most common way to fail a driving test.
The key to safe driving is to perform proper defensive driving tactics. Keep your eyes moving, scanning and anticipating danger.
- Make sure to scan properly at intersections, cross-streets and side streets as you approach.
- Always check your surroundings, mirrors and check your blind spots when appropriate.
- Make sure to read the signs and traffic lights as you near.
- Help your examiner out by moving your head along with your eyes so they are satisfied in this.
The driving test is comprised of the most common daily driving procedures you will encounter. To better understand how to be successful is to know how to properly drive each procedure. Every procedure is broken down into 4 parts (CONTROL, OBSERVATION, POSITIONING, SIGNALS). The following procedures are checked on the driving test:
- Starting the Vehicle and backing out.
- Parking Lot Etiquette.
- General Right Turning.
- General Left Turning.
- Stop Signs without lines.
- Stop Signs with lines.
- Right of Way.
- Smooth operation of the vehicle.
- Understanding the vehicle controls.
- Parallel Parking.
- General Parking.
- Backing in a Straight Line.
- Yield Signs.
- Merging Traffic.
- Traffic Lights.
- Right on Reds
- Approaching Yellow Lights

Parallel parking unfortunately gets a bad rap. With a little bit of practice it is actually not too difficult. The purpose for this procedure is to test that you understand a complex driving maneuver in a stressful situation.
- A good Parallel Parking should be done in about 4 movements.
- You have 2 minutes to complete the procedure.
- You are allowed to restart with a 2-point penalty.
- We will use cones for this procedure.
- You are welcome to practice in our spaces at the back of the building.
- Hitting a cone is equivalent to hitting a car.
- Go over the curb the test is over.
- The space is 24 feet across so we don’t recommend large trucks.
- No farther than 18 inches off the curb when parked.
- Make sure to check your surroundings.
- Always watch for traffic before pulling out.
- Make sure to signal.
- If in doubt just put it in park and we will move on (with penalty).
Knowing the route is really inconsequential. The best way to be prepared is to know the procedures-that way you will be successful no matter where in the state you take this test.
- There is a primary route and backup route. We cannot guarantee which one you will get on test day.
Some helpful tips.
- Be as precise to the procedures as you can.
- Make sure to stop short of stop-signs and/or stop lines depending.
- If you can’t see around a visual obstacle you may creep forward after your initial legal stop.
- Remember “whoever stops first goes first,”
- Apply common sense in uncommon situations.
- No “rolling stops”
- Always come to a complete stop at red lights.
- Make sure to scan the entire windshield at intersections.
- At yields, you may need to either Stop, Slow, or Go.
- Always check your blind spots when appropriate.
- Don’t assume other driver’s are following the law.
- It’s better to be too slow than too fast.
- Watch your speed on the hills!
- Don’t impede traffic!
- Yellow traffic lights don’t mean to speed up.
- Get those eyes moving-don’t stare ahead for too long.
- Both hands on the wheel!

After passing your driving test you will need to proceed to a DPS License office to process and receive your new driver’s license. All of your paperwork along with the test will be sealed in an envelope and must remain sealed.

- AFTER THE TEST-
- LICENSE MAIL IN OPTION -
Yes skip the hassel of having to wait months for an appointment and making a visit to the DPS. The DPS now offers the ability to have a license mailed after a successful driving test if appropriate documentation is uploaded and the license printing fee is paid.
Using the TPST State License Portal, Mansfield Driving Academy will upload the required documents ,on your behalf, as required by the DPS. We will monitor the approval process and communicate any necessary changes, denials, or approvals when they occur.
The DPS makes no guarantee on the approval process but the average wait time for approvals range from 24-48hrs. DPS does not do approvals on the weekends.
- Mansfield Driving Academy will not refund the upload fee for any denials or long approval times.
- $50 – Upload to TPST Portal by Mansfield Driving Academy.
- $33 – License processing fee from DPS ( to be paid after portal approval)
The documents provided for the driving test will be the required documents to be uploaded.
In order to pay for the printing of the license a TxT account will need to be created with the State of Texas.
No, not until the license has been issued by DPS is a driver allowed to drive alone.
Yes, after payment on the TxT website and the documents have been approved, the DPS will email a temporary license (expires in 90 days) that can be printed and used as a temporary license. The plastic license will be mailed in a few weeks.
The mail-in-option is only allowed for testers who took a test at Mansfield Driving Academy. The following are exceptions where the DPS requires an in-person visit.
- Seeking a new license photo
- Court ordered testing.
- A failed driver’s test at a DPS office.
- Applicant who took a test but failed at the DPS and then retook the test at Mansfield Driving Academy is required to return to the DPS to process a license.
- Class A or B driver’s test.
- Motorcycle endorsement.
- Modified driver’s tests for disabled drivers.
- Applicants on a visa or temporary permitted drivers.
- LICENSE AT DPS OFFICE -
Yes the DPS requires an appointment when making a visit to a DPS licensing office.

- The DPS does allow for some walk-ins as space is made available around scheduled appointments. This is not a universal policy and varies between different license offices.
- Appointments can be made directly at a DPS office if needed.
- An applicant may go to any license office in the State of Texas.
- Appointment times can go fast and wait times can vary between weeks up to several months.
- DO NOT schedule a driving test on the same day as a DPS appointment.
- You are only allowed to test once per day.

Payment of $33 is required by the DPS to process the DPS.

The DPS will issue a temporary license when you make your visit at the license office (expires in 90 days). The plastic license will be mailed a few weeks after your visit.
After a successful test and processing by the DPS, the State of Texas will lift the permit restrictions which requires a licensed driver in the car with the permit driver. Also, if a teen, the DPS will lift the teen hold date as well.
If the applicant is 17 years and 10 months or older, the license will be unrestricted.
If the applicant is under 17 years and 10 months the license holder will be placed on a provisional license
- The provisional holder may drive alone.
